People In Bradford Told 'Get Walking To Get Healthy'

The council are encouraging people to walk for at least 10 minutes a day to improve health and obesity levels.

Bradford Council is supporting a new drive to encourage the district’s adults to build more physical activity into their lives by simply walking briskly for at least ten continuous minutes every day.

A daily, brisk 10 minute walk can make people feel better, more energetic and improve their mood. Over time it can also help lower the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

In addition, people are being encouraged to download a free mobile phone app – Active 10 – which shows how much brisk walking a person does throughout the day, and provides tips and encouragement on how to fit ten minute bursts of brisk walking into your day.

Cllr Val Slater, Deputy Leader and portfolio holder for Health and Wellbeing, said:

“It’s amazing the health benefits you can get from taking a 10-minute brisk walk and a more active lifestyle. This campaign fits in with our drive to help our residents live a happier and healthier life.

“The beauty of walking is it’s free. You don’t need any specialist clothing or equipment and it can fit into your everyday life whether it’s walking to work, stretching your legs at lunchtime or visiting your local park.

“I’ve started walking more in recent weeks and am feeling the benefits. If I can do it, you can too.”

Dr Chris Harris, one of the local GPs leading Bradford’s Healthy Hearts campaign, said: “Simply by eating well, exercising and making small life changes, people can increase their chances of having a relatively trouble-free and independent old age. Moderate intensity physical activity every day, including 10 continuous minutes of brisk walking, can lower the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

“Other benefits of 10 continuous minutes of brisk walking every day are increased physical fitness, improved mood, improved quality of life, increased physical leanness and healthier weight. When people take good care of their own health it has benefits for everyone: they spend less time at the GP and other appointments and get more enjoyment out of life.”
