Registering babies' births in Kirklees postponed due to coronavirus

New parents are being told to wait until the pandemic crisis is over

Parents of newborn babies will not be able to register their child’s birth in Kirklees until the coronavirus crisis is over.

Kirklees Council has also taken the decision to postpone all weddings, civil partnership and citizenship ceremonies in line with national guidelines.

The authority is limiting movement across the district and promoting social distancing for both the public and, where possible, staff.

That means it has changed how it registers weddings, deaths and births, with the latter requiring to be registered in person by one or both parents.

However, families can now claim for child benefit or universal credit prior to registering their child’s birth. Those changes have been directed by the General Register Office.

The council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate, Clr Graham Turner, said staff had been working hard to ensure “business as usual”.
He added:

“We must adhere to government restrictions and to prevent the spread of Covid-19. This is necessary to keep our residents and employees safe.

“These are difficult times for us all.

“However, if we all stay at home and ensure we keep social distancing when we go out to the shops, or for our daily exercise, then we will get through this quicker and protect our NHS and its hard-working staff.”

Anyone who wants to discuss an upcoming ceremony should email kirklees.ceremonies@kirklees.gov.uk and someone will respond as soon as possible. The registration service is giving priority to rearranging existing bookings. The service will pick up new bookings in due course.

Anyone needing to register deaths and stillbirths should book an appointment online ( https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/deaths-funerals-and-memorials/register-a-death.aspx) or telephone Huddersfield 01484 221030 or Dewsbury 01924 324733.

Face-to-face applications for certificates are not currently available so the council is asking people not to visit town halls.

Death certificates and copies of other certificates can instead be ordered online at https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/certificates/order-a-copy-certificate.aspx or by calling 01484 221030 or 01924 324733.

Certificates will be posted to the applicant’s home address.
